Monsters in Xalthea are more than threats—they’re ancient forces woven into the land’s chaotic history. From shape-shifting slimes to scheming demons and wild dragons, some act on instinct while others form intelligent societies on occasion Not all species are inherently evil or chaotic, some are often good, like the Kirin but even they can be corrupted. Across forests, mountains, and ruins, they challenge adventurers not just with power, but mystery. To survive Xalthea is to understand the monsters that define it.

Blinkbeast

Clumsy and lacking the elegant presence of most woodland creatures, Blinkbeasts are a crafty Race with a dual identity that helps them blend into society. All Blinkbeasts have a second identity as a Human (or occasionally, a different humanoid). Their Human form shares none of their wooden features and are normally indistinguishable from other Humans. Blinkbeasts are often feared and misunderstood, but they are rarely respected. Natives of the Bloom – an insidious realm of fierce trees and murderous beasts – and survive on their rapid teleportation and mastery of plant life.

Faerie

Fairies is umbrella term and it encompasses many types. Some are no more than eight inches tall but are surprisingly proud and charismatic for their stature. Some have wings and fly about, which they vastly prefer to walking. Many are skilled at weaving webs of deception using their control of light to fool unsuspecting targets, and they sometimes have animal companions as well. Most Fairies are good and honorable by nature, but some hail from darker realms.

Hellhound

Though they normally call the various Lower Planes their home, hell hounds may be summoned to serve as companions and guard animals for powerful magi and extraplanar beings. Their powerful bodies, fiendish instincts, and infernal breath makes them formidable opponents. Hell hounds naturally hunt in packs on their home plane, though they are often only summoned singly or in pairs to the Material Plane. They can comprehend language and instruction better than simple animals, which makes them highly trainable and good at following orders – if they respect or fear their master. They are far from domesticated beasts, though, with evil inclinations towards hunting, killing, and feasting. Some are evolved enough to even speak.

Lung Dragon

Also called the Eastern Dragon, the Lung is a majestic, serpentine entity that commands both sky and sea with sovereign grace. Its elongated body, often stretching over 60 feet, glides effortlessly through clouds or coils beneath ocean waves, its iridescent scales shifting hue with the surrounding elements. Unlike chromatic or metallic dragons, the Lung does not rely on brute force or breath weapons; instead, it wields potent innate magic—weather manipulation, water shaping, illusion, and planar travel among its favored talents. They are known to calm tempests or summon monsoons, part tides or cloak entire regions in fog. Their lairs are often hidden in floating sanctuaries above mountain peaks or deep within submerged caverns protected by illusory currents.

Succubus and Incubus

Succubi  and Incubi are native fiends of the Lower Planes who serve demon lords and higher beings in their quests for domination. Once they cross over to the Material Plane – through a summoning, magical transport, or other means – they can move freely between the Material and Ethereal Planes.

They are the embodiment of sexuality, lust, and desire. Succubi assume a female humanoid form while Incubi assume a male, and then use their allure to charm one nearby intelligent creature at a time. Once their target is charmed, they gain major control over their mind that includes the option of commanding aggressive actions against the target’s allies.

Slime

These intelligent drops of dense goo are typically the size of a wine cask and the shape of a teardrop or onion – though some unusual Slimes are as small as a thimble or as large as a tavern. Although some Slimes have small wings and can fly, most are wingless and scoot merrily along the ground. Slimes are not as fluid as they seem; they can be caged if the bars are packed close together. There are dozens of Slime varieties, and each Subrace has a distinct magical ability according to its color. Most Slime civilizations of villages and towns are composed of a monochromatic population (all blue, all red, all copper, etc.), though “polychrome” towns are not unique. Much to their frustration, Slimes are often disregarded as unintelligent monsters. They are typically well aware of their limitations in humanoid societies, though, and approach such interactions accordingly. Slime often evolve as well over to time sometime into a metal slime other times into a Slime Gluttonia, to name a few.

Demonaga

Created as a magical fusion between a naga serpent and a summoned demon over a millennium ago, Demonaga can measure up to 16 feet from horns to tail. They comfortably project a height of to seven to eight feet, with their tail trailing behind for balance and attacks. Their scaly hide, fearsome horns, and chiselled features make for an impressive sight. The lines of flame that radiate from their torso, eyes, and mouth complete their terrifying visage. A Demonaga’s hairless skin tones tend towards the muted browns and greens, though red and purple hues are also possible.

Onirai

Onirai, some call them fiends, are cunning manifestations of corrupted magic, ancient grudges, and sacrificial pacts long forgotten. Agents of chaos—born from rifts, relics, and ritual failures—who twist the natural order with deceptive charm and infernal might. Their warped forms vary from humanoid horrors to aberrant masses, each carrying echoes of the dark forces that spawned them. Whether serving shadowed masters or pursuing their own sinister goals, Onirai unravel civilization through manipulation, terror, and slow decay. Do not underestimate this monster, and be wary of talking your self into a contract. You may just find yourself on the end of Onirai's leash if you are not wary.

Kobold

As one of the weakest common humanoid Races, the reptilian kobolds form substantial tribal communities for mutual defence against more powerful predators. Some kobold bands serve a more powerful boss monster, such as a dragon or mage, and act as minions, informants, and loot gatherers. Others engage in hostile skirmishes with rival kobold tribes, fighting over food, resources, shelter, and territory. Kobold are skilled tunnellers and builders. They frequently riddle their underground lairs with dozens or hundreds of traps to capture or kill invaders, favouring sneak attacks over direct confrontation

Variant: A cousin to the reptilian kobold exists that takes on more canine features.

Minotaur

Minotaurs are towering, bipedal humanoids with the head and horns of a bull, known for their immense physical strength, labyrinthine instincts, and unwavering tenacity. Averaging 8 to 10 feet in height, their muscular frames are built for endurance and brute force, often clad in minimal armor to allow full range of motion in close-quarters combat. Their horns are not merely ornamental—they are used in charging attacks, ritual duels, and territorial displays.  Minotaurs possess a natural affinity for mazes, ruins, and underground complexes. Their spatial memory is near-perfect, allowing them to navigate complex environments without maps or markers. This trait has made them invaluable as wardens, sentinels, and guardians of sacred or forbidden places.

Tauris

Tauris have the upper bodies, down to the waist, of muscular humans, displaying all the human variety of skin tones and features. Their ears are slightly pointed, but their faces are wider and squarer than those of elves. Below the waist, they have the bodies of small horses, deer, and even big cats with a similar range of coloration — from various shades and pattens that mirror the natural occurring counterparts. The upper bodies of tauris are comparable to human torsos in size, and their lower equine bodies average about 5 feet tall at the withers. Though they are smaller than a human rider mounted on a horse, they fill similar roles as cavalry warriors, messengers, outriders, and scouts.

Western Dragon

Dragons are amongst the most respected and feared of all beasts dragons. Coming in chromatic, metallic and even gem varieties. Their primary concern is the size of their treasure hoard, which they covet proudly as much as life itself. Adults are vicious hunters, arrogant tyrants, and obsessive collectors. They demand loyalty and service from all humanoid tribes in the expansive domain surrounding their mountain lairs – or they will rain down fire on those who refuse to bend the knee and serve up appropriate tribute. Many people who have never seen these giant flying reptiles may mistake wyverns for dragons; while they are related, the two fearsome beast are distinct.

Kitsune

Kitsune are fox spirits known for shapeshifting, illusion magic, and elemental affinity—most often fire, wind, or spirit. Their power grows with age, reflected in the number of tails they possess; up to nine-tails. Kitsune possess a tailless form, typically a human form that they have shapeshifted into. When shapeshifting, a young or inexperienced kitsune may have difficulty hiding its tail(s), and its true nature can sometimes be revealed by its shadow, reflection, or if it becomes drunk.  They conjure foxfire, bend space, and slip between realms. Though playful, they are dangerous when crossed—never forgetting a slight, and rarely forgiving one.

Goblin

The smaller cousins of hobgoblins and bugbears, goblins are inherently lazy, selfish, greedy, and unfocussed. They crave power, yet lack the will to act on their desire. Though they are individually weak, goblins band together in substantial gangs to take what they want and destroy what they don’t. Goblins form strict hierarchies based on strength and power. Might makes right, though sometimes cleverness and guile can overcome mere muscles when convincing a band of followers. They enjoy the pain and suffering of other humanoids (including members of rival goblin tribes), and frequently torture their captives before eating them.  If their homes attracts too many invaders and thus become too dangerous, goblins will simply soon move to another location

Undead

Undead are beings who have crossed the threshold of death yet remain active through necromantic force, cursed vitality, or sheer will. They range from mindless corpses to calculating immortals, encompassing zombies, skeletons, liches, vampires, wraiths, and more. Some retain fragments of their former selves, while others are hollow vessels driven by hunger, hatred, or command. Some—like liches and vampires—wield powerful magic or command legions of lesser undead. Though feared and often hunted, undead are not always mindless nor evil; some seek redemption, others vengeance, and a rare few carve empires within shadows. What is for sure is you never quite know what you will get.

Tanuki

Tanuki are medium sized shapeshifting fey beasts native to the mist-laced groves and hidden glades of Country of Water to which Toraj is the captial, in Xalthea. Known for their playful trickery and uncanny mimicry, they walk the line between beast and spirit — often appearing as masked wanderers, traveling performers, or humble merchants with more than one secret tucked beneath their robes.

Though they resemble raccoon-like bipeds with expressive eyes and bushy tails, their true forms shimmer with illusion magic. Many wear enchanted charms or ceremonial sashes to suppress their aura and pass among mortals unnoticed. They can take the shape of any known demi-human species as well as human.

Wyvern

Wyverns are fierce, winged draconic predators with two powerful hind legs and massive, bat-like wings that grant them swift, agile flight. Unlike true dragons, they lack forelimbs, giving them a leaner, more aerodynamic build suited for ambush and pursuit. Their most feared weapon is a long, muscular tail tipped with a venomous stinger, capable of paralyzing prey or piercing armor with a single strike. Wyverns are solitary and territorial, nesting in high cliffs or ancient ruins, and are known to dive from the skies with lethal precision. Though not as magically gifted as dragons, their cunning and brutality make them apex threats in any wild region.
